UNLV Volleyball is Back!

Get Out to Cox Pavillion to Support Your Lady Rebels This Fall!

As autumn approaches, the excitement of another season of UNLV Women's Volleyball is electric. With three games already under their belt, the defending Mountain West regular-season champions are gearing up for another thrilling season in 2023, and the preseason poll and awards from earlier in the month have only added to the anticipation.

In the league's preseason poll, UNLV garnered 92 points and secured three first-place votes, putting them in a tie for the top spot with Utah State, who also received 92 points and five first-place votes. Colorado State, with three first-place votes of their own, is predicted to finish third with 86 points. Meanwhile, New Mexico and San Diego State find themselves in a shared fourth place with 64 points. The rankings continue, with Boise State (59), Air Force (38), San Jose State (35), UNR (32), Wyoming (28), and Fresno State (15) occupying spots six through eleven, respectively.

Under the guidance of first-year head coach Malia Shoji, the Rebels are building on their impressive 26-win campaign in 2022, which culminated in another NCAA Tournament appearance. The prospect of the Lady Rebels clinching the #1 spot and winning the conference title would mark them as back-to-back regular season champions, adding to their legacy.

For those eager to support the team, tickets are available for just $6 per game when purchased more than 24 hours in advance, or $10 on game day. A fantastic opportunity for die-hard fans is the season ticket package, priced at a mere $50, granting access to all 13 home games. Additionally, discounts are available for seniors, faculty/staff, and active alumni, making it even more accessible to show your love for the team and the Lady Rebels.

The home opener is September 12th at 6:30 PM at the Cox Pavilion. Single game tickets and season tickets can be purchased through UNLV here: UNLV Volleyball Tickets.

We’re sure you’ve heard about Punxsutawney Phil of Pennsylvania, but did you know Nevada has its own unique way of signaling the arrival of spring in the desert? His name is Mojave Max! Mojave Max, a tortoise residing at the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas, acts as a local mascot for the desert tortoise conservation program. Katrina Smith, the Senior Zoologist at the preserve, explains that Mojave Max's emergence is rooted in biology rather than folklore. Unlike a rodent seeing its shadow, which holds no real significance, the emergence of a desert tortoise is a biological event. For Max, the temperature inside his burrow must reach a certain threshold before he becomes active. This signals the warming weather, the blooming of flowers, and the increase in wildlife activity. When he emerges, it marks the official arrival of spring! Over the past two years, Max has emerged in late March, and his return has become a highly anticipated event. For over 25 years, local elementary students have been participating in the Mojave Max Emergence Contest, guessing the date of his big appearance. Mojave Max's emergence serves as a reminder that spring in the desert is not just a season, but a living, breathing change in the environment that calls for our attention and care!
