The Benefits of having Renter’s Insurance: What you need to know

Essential Information for Protecting Your Belongings

Renters insurance is an often overlooked, yet essential protection for renters. Let’s dissect what it is, how it differs from Tenant Liability Insurance, and why it's not included in the Resident Benefit Package.

What is Renters Insurance?

Renters insurance covers your personal property inside your unit. If something happens— like a fire or burglary—your belongings can be protected.

When is Renters Insurance Useful?

Fire, Water Damage, Theft, or Vandalism: Renters insurance can help cover the cost of replacing damaged property like clothing, furniture, and electronics.

Displacement Coverage: If your unit becomes uninhabitable due to a covered event, renters insurance may help pay for temporary living arrangements. Check with your provider to confirm this coverage.

Food Spoilage: Some policies may cover spoiled food if there’s a power outage.

*Be sure to review your plan with your insurance provider, as coverage varies.

How is Renters Insurance Different from Tenant Liability Insurance?

Both renters insurance and tenant liability insurance offer liability protection, but with key differences. McKenna Property Management requires tenant liability insurance as part of your Resident Benefit Package, which covers damage you may cause to the property, such as overflowing a bathtub. However, tenant liability insurance does NOT cover your personal belongings or temporary living expenses. Renters insurance, on the other hand, offers comprehensive protection for your personal property.

Why Renters Insurance is Not Included in Your Resident Benefit Package

While our Resident Benefit Package offers many perks, renters insurance isn’t included because it’s a personal policy. It’s up to you to secure coverage for your belongings and liability. We require all residents to obtain renters insurance for their own protection, giving you peace of mind that you're covered if life throws you a curveball!
